An unnamed man, simply called "The Man" is trapped in a cubical white room where anyone else can enter and leave, but which he himself apparently cannot leave. The main character, is subjected to an increasingly puzzling and frustrating series of encounters, as a variety of people come through various hidden doors. But, as many remind him, he can only leave through his own door, so he must find it to leave.

The night is very hot. Gang-Doo is having sex with Yoon-Ah, his girlfriend, but it doesn’t look like he is enjoying it. He tries to concentrate but the heat doesn’t allow him to keep going. He goes to the kitchen looking for refreshment, and when he rubs an ice cube over his skin he feels an intense arousal he's never felt before. He goes to the bathroom to avoid being discovered by his girlfriend, and there the ice cube rubbing against his body turns into an intense and beautiful experience full of pleasure, but ephemeral as the ice cube quickly melts away. After the ice cube melts, Gang-Doo goes back to his bed with Yoon-Ah, full of disappointment, guilt and confusion. She tells him she is worried that Gang-Doo doesn’t love her anymore but Gang-Doo tells her he is just irritated because of the heat. Gang-Doo and Yoon-Ah engage in their sex session again, but Gang-Doo still can’t feel arousal, and he can't get the thought of ice out of his mind until it overwhelms him.
